Banner montage of a variety of non designated heritage assets

This is the first of many news posts which will update readers on progress and changes to the site.  We hope that you find the site easy to use and that it will allow individuals and communities to identify and celebrate historic buildings, places and spaces which enrich and enliven their area

A bit of background – following a successful bid to central government, a grant of £70k was made available in October 2019 to allow the local authorities in West Yorkshire to set up an interactive web-based platform to administer and publish local lists of non-designated heritage assets (NDHAs) for all five West Yorkshire authorities.  Leeds was the lead authority for the project with responsibility for the design and project management, after which each local authority is responsible for the administration of the local list in their area.

The local list is made up of existing NDHAs in existing documents such as local plans, neighbourhood plans and conservation area appraisals and 'open source' nominations from the public and third-party organisations.

During the development of the local list, pilot schemes were set up in each local authority area to test the methodology and to build up capacity within the local community to nominate assets for the local list and within local authority to make assessments.  We are grateful for help of the Campaign for Real Ale, Wakefield Civic Society and Stan Driver for his work on non-conformist places of worship in the Holme Valley, amongst others, and are sure that their involvement has improved the local list.

Please take time to have a look at some of the assets on the list which may inspire you to put forward assets for assessment.  Get nominating!
