Description

19th century metal pump, one of three similar pumps in the village. Presumed village pump still extant at NGR. Cast iron. Maker's name on shaft: G. Owens and Co. Engineers, London. Joint between handle & piston broken, otherwise in good condition. Small square enclosure immediately adjacent to pump on w presumably provides access to the well (B1). C19 metal pump, complete with handle. This is an attractive structure that adds to the visual attraction of the street. It is interesting in terms of our understanding of the role water sources played in the original development of the village as well as the development of water and sanitation during the 19th and 20th centuries. This pump is one of a group of three similar pumps located throughout the village. Local Heritage Asset in conservation area (B2).
