Description

Field-name evidence suggests this mound was a prehistoric barrow but finds of medieval pottery after deep ploughing suggest it was a windmill mound Plan Form - CIRCULAR BROAD LOW MOUND. IN FIELD ADJACENT TO DESERTED SETTLEMENT OF SHUCKLOW (CASS 0207). SHUCKLOW means the BARROW OF THE EVIL GOBLIN, SO IS THIS MOUND AROUND BARROW? (B2). DRAWING of MILL MOUND? (B3). SITE ADJOINS PARISH BOUNDARY (B2). FIELDNAME on Salden Estate map appears to be 'Berry Field' (B1). PHOTO FILED. MEDIEVAL POTTERY SHERDS COLLECTED FROM MOUND, SO PERHAPS SITE IS A WINDMILL MOUND (CF CAS 0485)(B3). 11 FURTHER MEDIEVAL SHERDS COLLECTED FROM SITE OF CENTRE OF MOUND AFTER DEEP PLOUGHING (B5).
