Description

Eighteenth and nineteenth century park and gardens of Nether Winchendon House with twentieth century alterations and additions First shown in Bryant, 1824, as parkland. There is nothing really there until the 20th century when the owners built a walled garden, orchards and lawns. Of little interest because it is too recent, however the association with an important historic manor makes it far more interesting (B8). A late C18 and C19 garden and park, with garden phases in the mid-late C20, which survives intact. It is associated with a C15 and C16 manor house remodelled in Gothick style c.1800. The adjacent picturesque village makes a strong contribution to the approach and setting to the west as does the wider rural Vale of Aylesbury and River Thame setting including views south towards Cuddington and the Chiltern scarp beyond. See report for detail (B9).
