Description

Nineteenth to twentieth century gardens at Durden Court Tilehouse was built in 1800. The first edition 6" OS map shows the house situated in parkland with evidence of formal gardens. Also there is an orchard and a walled ?kitchen garden. The 1926 map shows the grounds much reduced and a lodge has appeared. The modern maps show a residential development. Mid-20th century then original house burnt down and was demolished. AP's show some elements of parkland still intact the rest has gone, probably with the house (B1). The outer grounds of a lost country house (replaced with a larger hotel on the same site), developed from 1800, and later in the C19 by the Drummond family. Little of the core of the designed landscape associated with the immediate environs of the former house survives intact but elements of the wider landscape, particularly the former parkland, survive. (See report for detail)(B2).
