Description

Two early nineteenth century cottages with later alterations and extensions, demolished in 2007. Historic building recording at 59-61 Main Road, Drayton Parslow was undertaken prior to demolition of the buildings. 59 Main Road comprised two early 19th century cottages (later made into one property) and No 61 was a later 20th century extension, put up sometime after 1910. The earlier cottages were built in red brick with yellow brick dressings and header decoration, and had slate gabled roofs. Each cottage originally had two small-paned sash windows and a single door on the southwest elevation, and two small casements on the northeast elevation. A central chimney was present in the interior but no stack survived above roof height. The extension (no 61) to the northwest was made of red brick with casement windows to the from and rear and a gabled slate roof. Details in the interior of No 59 such as the plain fireplace surround, slender square balusters, machine-cut florrboards, and sash windows, strongly suggest a late Regency to early Victorian date range for construction (B1). A local building of note within the conservation area. (B2)
