Description

18th to 19th Century milestone on A413 Aylesbury Road in Wendover Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone beside A413 north of Wendover. Squared stone pillar 27-30 inches high and 12 inches deep with chamfered top with incised OS benchmark. Incised inscription with black paint 'TO LONDON 36' on side facing road and 'TO AYLESBURY 4 MILES' on north side. The milepost appears to have been rotated or moved across the road as the Aylesbury inscription is facing towards Aylesbury. [Drawings, location and photographs] (B1). Recorded on Milestones Society survey website (updated 2010) as present in 2003. National ID number BU_LC36 on Amersham to Aylesbury route. On A413 on Aylesbury Road, Wendover outside recreation ground. On east side of road. 29cm wide, 29cm deep, 71cm high. 'Marked pitting of base'. Inscription: left: TO AYLESBURY 4 MILES : front: TO LONDON 36. [Detailed description, photograph and location] (B2). Confirmed by notes on OSD Surveyors Drawings (1814) and OS 6 inch (1885). On Aylesbury to Wendover road towards Amersham (C4) In same records under Milestones-Types " 1/2 Mile from River Colne to Aylesbury - C2,C3,C4." Stone. Flat face parallel to road.4 sided. Except- Bedgrove (London 39)-angled to road, lettered on 2 sides. Note O.S. maps will show present postions- may not coincide with historical positions. Also under "MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C1/ 2/3/4/5/6/7 L1." On OS 1" 1835, Jefferies and Bryant. N. Wendover - Level Crossing Gate. In same notes under Milestones C in red box. In Peter Gullands extensive study The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 this milestone is on The Wendover and Buckingham Turnpike Road 1721 p99. One of 116 milemarkers in Bucks out of a possible 230 according to sources. From the junction of Aylesbury and Wharf Road Wendover to north of London Bridge Road in Buckingham. Milestones from London 36 South Street Wendover to 56 near Tescoes supermarket Buckingham. Jefferies shows complete sequence of 21, 15 survive 300 yards north because re-sitng in 1835 because of shortening futher south, 57 was removed after 1835. Square with pyramidal top inscription two faces placed at angle to road trianglar wedge in back. Incised capital letters give distance to London . Not all on same side of road maybe not replaced properly after WW 2. No complete change so piecemal replacements where necessary. [ Copy in HER ] (B4).
