Description

18th or 19th Century milestone on A4010 in Saunderton Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on A4010 north of High Wycombe. Stone pillar 32 inches high 12 by 9 inches deep. Incised and painted with black paint some not easy to read. Front:' LONDON 34 ? WYCOMBE 5 RISBOROUGH 3 1/2 AYLESBURY 11'. 'Possibly maintained by householder in property behind'. At slight angle to road. [ Drawings, location and photographs available ] (B1). Present in 2002 on updated Milestones Society survey website on Wycombe to Aylesbury route National ID number BU_WYA05. On west side A4010 ' on well cut grass verge' in front of Chiltern View in Saunderton at junction with Hill View'. 32cm wideX 22cm deep X 84 cms high. Inscription: centre: ..14/ WYCOMBE/ 5 / RISBORO/ 3 1/2 /AYLESBURY/ 11. ' When paint goes inscription will go '. [ Detailed description, location and photograph available ] (B2). No suitable estmate of height on current OS map. Confirmed as present on handwritten notes of microfiched OSD Surveyor's Drawings (1814) and 1 inch (1835) on W.Wycombe to Pr. Risborough (J1) route on page 5 of notes. Bucks County Museum number 41 sheet XLI now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Inscription: Wycombe 3 Risborough 5. [ Handwritten notes consulted ] (B3 ).
