18th or 19th Century milestone on A40 in Piddington opposite Dashwood Arms PH
Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on A40 at Piddington opposite Dashwood Arms PH. Stone pillar vertical dimensions not recorded. Chamfered top 15 1/2 by 16 inches deep with 2 inch diameter cuphole in top. At 45 degree angle to road. Incised and painted with black paint. North: Oxford 21 Tetsworth 9. West: London 33 Wycombe 4. Recorded as present on Milestones Society survey website in 2002 on A40 on Uxbridge to Stokenchurch route National ID number BU_LW33. On south side of Wycombe Road ' on wide grass verge on edge to road '. 39cm wide 40cm deep 76cm high. Inscription: left: Oxford 21 Tetsworth 9: right: London 33 Wycombe 4: back: ? old carving still visible and carved benchmark lower left. ' Lichen and moss '. Confirmed by handwritten notes of microfiched OSD Surveyors Drawings (1814) and OS 1 inch (1835). Museum number XLI sheet 41 now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Oxford to W.
