Description

18th or 19th Century milestone on B 482 in Lane End High Street Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on B 482 at Lane End outside Village Hall. Stone is at odd orientation to road, so has possibly been moved. 33 inches high with shoulder two thirds down. Top squared 15 by 13 inches with D shape overlying. Inscription: clear on road side only, paint nearly all gone :' STOKENCHURCH 4 1/2 MARLOW '? Means eqidistant from both'. ' ? Letters stuck on like giant letraset '. [ Drawings, location and photographs available ] (B1). Recorded as present in 2002 on Milestones Society survey website on Marlow to Stokenchurch route National ID number BU_MWST05. On west side of B482 on Lane End High Street. ' On grass outside Village Hall.' 38cm wide 33cm deep 81cm high. Inscription: left: STOKENCHURCH 4 1/2 MARLOW 5. ' no carving visible '. [ Detailed description, location and photograph available ] (B2). Confirmed by handwritten notes of 1 inch OSD map (1835) on Marlow to Stokenchurch route (M). Correct inscription : Stoke 4: Marlow 4. On page 5 of notes Bucks County Museum number XLVI sheet 46 now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Also on all historic layers map as Stokenchurch 4 : Marlow 4. In same notes under "C in red box".
