18th or 19th Century milestone on Buckingham to Aylesbury Road at Adstock Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone recorded on the A413 at the Adstock Turn by V.J. Bignell (Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society) in January 1964. One of 14 possible milestones (two missing between Buckslow Farm and Whitchurch) on the Aylesbury to Buckingham Road. Mostly grey brown stone, flat faces, chamfered with rounded tops. Inscription incised with letters painted black.This one has different cross section, recorded as milepost on OS map. On west side of the road 38 inches high. 4 inch square depression in top and bench mark. [ Drawings, description and location card consulted] (B1). Recorded as present in 2002 on Milestones Society website on Aylesbury to Buckingham route A413 National ID number BU_LC53. On south side of road. 'South of Adstock near footpath on grass verge'. ' Carved benchmark top right moss on top and base'. 25cm wide, 25cm deep, 81 cm high. Inscription: left face: BANBURY 21 BUCKINGHAM 4 :right face: LONDON 53 AYLESBURY 13 WINSLOW 2. [ Detailed description, location and photograph available ] (B2). Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) from Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 13 sheet XII on page1 of notes. Inscription: London 53. On Buckingham to Winslow (C6) route. In same notes under Milestones - Types " N. Aylesbury to Buckingham - C5,C6. Stone- 5 sided. Angled to road, lettered on 2 sides." Note O.S. maps will show present positions- may not coincide with historical positions. In same notes under "MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1". On second page under blue N, of London. On Jefferies, Bryant and OS1" 1835. 53: S. of Adstock. L in pencil.
