18th or 19th Century milestone on Buckingham to Aylesbury Road at Swanbourne
Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on Buckingham to Aylesbury Road, one of 14 recorded by V.F.Bignell ( Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ) in January 1964 on 3 cards. Mostly grey brown stone with flat faces and some chamfered edges. Rounded tops painted white Inscriptions incised and painted black.Inscription: Left face: LONDON 49 AYLESBURY 9. Right face: BUCKINGHAM 8. This one is on east side of road 30 inches high near Bennett's Hill, with a bench mark. Not on current OS map but on County 1st Edition 1-2500 inches. Recorded as present in 2003 on Milestones Society website on Aylesbury to Buckingham route A413 National ID number BU_LC49. On north side of road. 'At Bennett's Hill near North House Farm on wide grass verge scratched'. 33cm wide 28cm deep 63cm high. Inscription: left face: LONDON 49 AYLESBURY : centre face: BUCKINGHAM 8. Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched surveyors drawings (1814) and 1" OS map (1835) from Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 19 sheet XIX page 2 of notes. Inscription: B'Ham 8 London 49 . On Winslow (N&S) (C6) route. Also in same notes under Milestones- Types " N. Aylesbury to Buckingham - C5,C6. Stone- 5 sided. Angled to road, lettered on 2 sides." Note O.S. maps will show present postions - may not coincide with historical positions. In same notes " MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1." Top of second page in blue N from London. On Jefferies and Bryant and OS 1" 1835. 49: N. of Holcombe Farm in brackets underneath in pencil (Oakham Farm on OS 1984 ). R in blue. In same notes under "C in red box: Milestones". Sketch of blank stone: 49 London. In same notes again under Milestones with C in red box.
