Description

18th or 19th Century milepost on Wycombe Road at Marlow Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century century metal milepost on Wycombe Road Marlow at peak of hill before traffic island. Recorded as present on updated Milestones Society survey website in 2002 on Marlow to Wycombe route National ID number BU_RGHT16. On east side of unclassified road 52cm wide 30cm deep 88cm high. Inscription in black paint: top: HATFIELD 35 : left: MARLOW 1 : right: WYCOMBE 4. Material recorded as stone on on website but presumably metal from other descriptors. ' Restored by Bucks CC in the 20th C.' [Detailed description, location and photograph] (B1). Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and OS 1" map (1835) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies, museum number 47 sheet XLVII. Inscription: Marlow 1 :Wycombe 4. On High Wycombe to Marlow (F4) route. On page 6 of notes. Also on page F of notes under Mile Stones [Hatfield] Chenies to Henley - " Gout Track". Number 4 on 1" OS (1835). Bench mark on ' All Historic Layers Database'. [Handwritten notes] (B2).
