Description

18th or 19th Century milepost on A418 at Hartwell Probable eighteenth to ineteenth century cast iron milepost on A418 outside Bugle Horn PH in Hartwell at Sedrup Lane junction. Present in 2002 on updated Milestones Society survey website on Shillingford to Aylesbury route National ID number BU_AYTH02. Recorded as milestone on current OS map. On north side of road 49.5cm wide 23cm deep 99cm high. Inscription : top: HARTWELL PARISH : left: TO THAME 8 MILES: right: TO AYLES- - BURY 2 MILES. [Detailed description, location and photograph] (B1). Supported by notes on microfiched OSD Surveyors drawings (1814) and notes on 1" County Map (1835). Were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Thame to Aylesbury (N2) museum number 33 sheet XXXIII page 4 of notes. Inscription as above: Thame 8 Ayles 2: plus LONDON 40. In same notes under Milestones and N in red box. 1810 50 Geo. III c. 74 Road to be measured and MSs to be set up (Ayl. - Hockliffe). In pencil (?TMs). Blue Folder 1. 1821 MPs to be set up - Ayl. (Black Swan) to West Chester Road.Blue Folder 1. "1820s or 1830s" Cast Iron MPs, made by Seymour , Aylesbury, and probably made 1820s or 1830s."
