Description

17, West Street known as The Buckingham Fort. On the eastern side of the junction with School Lane is 17, West Street known as The Buckingham Fort. Built on the site of an ancient inn, this building was constructed in the 1930s as 'The Barrel' public house. It is a distinctive building with its canted elevations mimicking the curve of the junction and it appears particularly prominently in views looking eastwards along West Street. The replacement of the original leaded light windows with modern plate glass on the ground floor has altered the appearance of the building. This is a local building of note within the Conservation Area of Buckingham. (B1).
