18th or 19th Century milepost on B4011 at Long Crendon
Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on the B4011 in Long Crendon parish. Recorded as present in 2002 on Milestones Society website on Thame to Blackthorn route National ID number BU_THBC03. 'On grass verge 10m from Woodway farm badly rusted'. On west sde of road 52cm wide 35cm deep 90cm high. Only on one layer of current OS on data base. Inscription: no longer visible but was: left: BICESTER 11 MILES : right: THAME 3 MILES. Confirmed by handwritten notes on OS 1" (1835) was in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 32 sheet XXXII on page 3 of notes. Inscription: Bicester 11 Thame 3. On ' All Historic Layers ' database as Bicester 12 Thame 3. On Long Crendon to Brill (N) route. In same notes under ' MILE STONES [ N.] Thame to Blackthorn'. NGR: 681 099. Parish: ditto Long Crendon. No number on 1" OS 1835. Information: Very poor. ( T. 3 B. 11 ) cast iron rusting badly. On All Historic layers at 6811 1000 just north of handwritten notes. [ Handwritten notes consulted ] (B2).
