Description

18th to 19th Century milepost on Buckingham to Brill road in Charndon Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on Buckingham to Brill road in Charnford parish. Confirmed by handwritten notes including field notes mostly from the 1980s. Under "MILE POSTS. BUCKINGHAM to BRILL. ( Max Davies only)". NGR: 681 243: Parish: Charndon: Number on OS 1835 none: Information: V.poor: ( Brill 9 Buck -7 ) Illus. as over + rough sketch. Illustration annotated: Metal mile posts on Buckingham to Brill road. No makers name. All similar design. [ Handwritten notes consulted ] (B1). In Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 this milepost was placed by the high way authorities because this road was not turnpiked. During WW2 milemarkers were removed for security reasons some were returned some not or put back in wrong place in 1945. Jefferies quotes 230 posible milemarkers records of 116 survive. (B2).
