Description

Possible Roman cremation cemetery and Saxon inhumation cemetery found in gravel-working in the nineteenth century SKELETONS FOUND IN GRAVEL PIT ON VILLAGE GREEN. SEVERAL INTERMENTS FOUND ON HILL NEAR BERRYSTEAD MARCH 1852 & AE CLASP. 6 SKELETONS NEAR KENNELS. ROMAN COINS, FIBULA, ARMOUR ETC DUG UP (B1). SEVERAL SAXON INTERMENTS E/W, SIGNS OF CREMATION (NO URNS) - ?PREVIOUS USE AS RB BURIAL GROUND (B2-4,B8). RB/AS RELICS: NGR (B6). Negative watching brief carried out by Oxford Archaeological Unit in 1999 durig groundworks for building extensions at The Old Aviary. Extensive disturbance and made ground up to 1.1m deep from earlier building works was observed (B9).
