Description
Built in 1890 to an unusual design which is unlike any other structure in Waddesdon.
Built in 1890 by H.H. Sherwin who was employed as a contractor at Waddesdon Manor. Orientated
so gable faces onto the street, this building is prominently positioned at a bend in the High Street
and therefore provides a focus to views when approaching from the south-east. Three storeys in
height and three bays wide, the building sits beneath an unusual shaped roof, relatively shallow in
pitch and laid in slates. Constructed of brick with painted stone quoins, window surrounds and
string courses between floors. Central doorway approached by short flight of steps contained
beneath open stone curved porch on top of which used be a glazed conservatory (now demolished)
Canted stone bays flank either side of entrance. Grandiose in style, this rather quirky building is
unlike any other structure in Waddesdon, while remaining a building of its era. The building is of
local interest despite changes to the windows and the loss of the conservatory and balustrades
which used to adorn the bay windows. Local Heritage Asset in conservation area (1).
