Probable early twentieth century entrance gates to Mentmore House at Cheddington Lodge
Gate piers to Cheddington Lodge, origin unclear, probably early C20, replaced c.1868 timber gateway in
similar style to former Crafton, Wing Lodge and Laundry gateways. Tall ashlar piers with stone urn finials, west one lost after 1997. Modern gates.
Significance: Marks main south park entrance from Cheddington and the railway station from London,
alongside picturesque thatched lodge; one of the most important park gateways.
Issues: One pier damaged, lost urn finial; gates replaced; origin of piers unclear, and hence level of
significance. A local note building within the conservation area of Mentmore (B19).
