Description

Early nineteenth century or earlier public house known as the Horse Shoes, rebuilt in the late nineteenth century in Arts and Crafts style and renamed the Beaconsfield Arms Building shown at this location on Jefferies 1766 map; ‘Horse Shoes’ and building shown on 1812 OS surveyor’s 2-inch draft drawing; ‘Four Horseshoes public house’ shown on c1880 1st edition 25-inch OS map (surveyed 1874-1876); ‘Beaconsfield Arms public house’ on same footprint shown on 1898 2nd edition 25-inch OS (revised 1897). Historic photograph of about 1900 in Bucks Free Press collection (BFP:03167) shows the building before the rebuilding or remodelling of the Hamilton Road end (B1). The current building dates from the late 19th century at its north end and c1905 at the Hamilton Road end. There has been a PH in this location since well before the 1870s based in a cottage that survived until c1905. The building is a long established public house and its Arts and Crafts design contributes positively to the historic environment of this part of High Wycombe (B2).
