Description

Early nineteenth century or earlier farmhouse at Charndon Grounds Farm, with mid or late nineteenth century extensions Farmhouse with stone front (S) range and two parallel rear brick extensions of mid-or late C19 date. The farmhouse is felt to have the following aspects of significance which therefore qualify it as a non designated heritage asset: Architectural interest – the architectural treatments of the different parts of the building represent the various periods of construction; for example the symmetry and formality of the brick range demonstrate the typical style of the mid/late C19th. Aesthetic interest – the building has a number of attractive features such as the bay windows, the chimneys, canopied porch, windows, materials and overall form, including symmetry of the brick range. It is noted that its condition is poor, however on the basis of the current information it would seem feasible that this could be addressed with a suitable programme of works. Historic interest – the building appears to be date at least from the mid-late C19th, confirmed by the 1885 OS map, when the site was known as Hill Farm. Evidential value – the site as a whole, and the buildings within it, hold value as demonstrating the agricultural history and use of the area and site. Furthermore, the architectural and aesthetic interest of the building and its various phases demonstrates the changes to farming practices and the status of the occupants (B1). Farmhouse and another farm building apparently shown on OS surveyor's 2-inch draft drawing of c1812. The map shows the farm access track taking a different course originally and approaching from the south, which presumably explains why the farmhouse faces south (B2).
