Description
Early nineteenth century witchert outbuilding built in the 1800s
The wychert outbuilding, currently used as a garage dates to the 1800s. Although altered to the front aspect with the addition of a 1990s lean-to extension, it retains a number of pleasing historic features which include: eyebrow dormer, original timber beams and wychert walls, fireplace, and timber stair/ ladder to a first floor level. Small wychert outbuildings are a significant and threatened feature within the Chearsley Conservation Area and it is believed that this one was constructed to provide emergency housing during the 1800s, as such it also contributes to the historic narrative of the wider village. The property also contains an historic well, and once formed the site of the former Pig and Whistle PH (now lost). The wychert outbuilding is significant for the following reasons: age, rarity, aesthetic interest, group value with other remaining similar buildings and the historic well, as well as social and communal value relating to the history of the village (B1).
